PTA President's Corner

Hickory Woods families, the book drive is over and we can officially call it a major success. Our HW community donated 7,354 books! Way to go Hickory Woods Elementary! Thank you.

Top Donating Class (Pizza Party Winner):

Mrs. Murray’s 3rd grade class donated 1,020 books!

Top Donating Class By Grade (Popsicle Winners):

Kindergarten - Miss Graichen, 232 books

1st - Mrs. Haven, 292 books

2nd - Mrs. Jankowski, 633 books

3rd - Mrs. Murray, 1,020 books

4th - Mrs. O’Rourke, 425 books

5th - Mrs. Watkins, 803 books

It needs to be mentioned that Ms. Mann's 5th grade class donated 744 books. That's an incredible amount of books! Thank you to all our families and staff. The class leaders, teachers and office staff were a huge help during the last month. Since everyone worked very hard, we're going to celebrate and give every class popsicles! Making Spirits Bright is very grateful for the books. The children's books will be used at under-resourced elementary schools in the metro Detroit area. Making Spirits Bright sponsors book fairs at these schools and each student will get to pick out 5 books for free. The adult books will go to senior living communities in lower-income areas and a local prison program.

We are in need of volunteers for the spring Breakfast With A Buddy and spring book fair. A sign-up will be emailed out soon. Please consider volunteering if you have the time.

PTA Meeting April 2nd & Board Positions:

If you're interested in joining the PTA board, nominations will be open at our next meeting on April 2nd. Meetings are held in the media center at 7pm. New faces are encouraged and welcomed! This month Dan Durkin, WLCSD Director of Community Relations, will be speaking about the upcoming bond proposal. This is a great opportunity to learn what the bond is and how it will impact our district.

Spring Flower Sale:

Spring flowers are back! For our new families, these are outdoor flowers and vegetable plants for your garden. The flowers are beautiful and the vegetable plants arrive mature and ready for planting. People love these plants! The pink flyer will be coming home in your child's backpack this week. You can look at the catalog here. After you go to the link, click on the blue download button to get a PDF of the catalog. The sale starts 4/1 and ends 4/15. Plant pick up will be Sunday, 5/19 in the school parking lot.

Snack Shack:

This week the two classrooms assigned to the Snack Shack are Mrs. DeRouche and Mrs. O’Rourke’s classes. If you'd like to contribute snacks or drinks you can drop them off in the school lobby between the two front doors. As always, you don't have to be in the assigned classes to donate. If you have something you'd like to share, the Snack Shack is always open! Here is the sign up. The sign up is for suggestions/guidance. If you have something you'd like to donate that isn't listed, donate that instead. The staff isn't picky. They appreciate everything that's given!

Staff Appreciation Week:

During the week of May 6th - May 10th we plan to spoil the amazing staff at HW who support our children all year long! As always we'll provide meals via food trucks and have our famous gift card day. On gift card day every staff member gets to pick out whichever gift card is their favorite. In order to make this happen, we need your help. Please consider signing up to bring in $10 gift cards or to donate money for the food trucks. Gift cards and money can be sent into the office throughout the month of April. You can also venmo dana-gorman-7, please put “staff appreciation" in the subject line. This is the staff's favorite week and we can't wait to make this one the best one yet! Sign up here.
